Process

I use a pre-selected limited range of acrylic paint to pour and scrape colours both horizontally and vertically. I then work with a found palette of of recycled fabric colours and textures whose selection contemplates a duality of textural surface and an illusion of created space. I contrast intricacy of qualities and the broad beautiful transient nature of the light of sky through trees or on water. Distortion of light occurs through the process of selecting, moving and placing the colours, fabrics and stitches to respond to the movement in trees, air and water in contrast with the perceived solidity of landmass.

The vertical nature of my paintings takes much from Chinese and Japanese landscape tradition of scrolls which allow a composition to move upwards without a change of scale, the perspective assuming the viewpoint is not stationary but always changing. This is used as a memory of walking and moving through particular landscapes. Environmental alterations and climate change are a constant concern.
